Shuman Juvenile Detention Center has been invited to exhibit student artwork in the lobby of City Theatre to run in conjunction with a play titled PIPELINE by Dominique Morisseau. The student exhibition is titled “Faces of the Pipeline and runs with the play from October 27 \u2013 November 18, 2018. This beautifully written and executed play addresses the issues of the “school to prison pipeline” and the challenges youth and family face when youth are pushed out of schools because of increasingly harsh school and municipal policies and introduced to the criminal justice system. We are so excited to exhibit and be part of this very important social justice mission.<\/span><\/div>\n

In 2017 Allegheny Shuman Juvenile Detention Center partnered with Gerry Florida of Florida Recycled to officially kick-off its newest community service program the\u00a0\u201cWhy Art?\u201d<\/b>\u00a0Shuman Juvenile Detention Center Billboard Project\u00a0<\/b>that was seen traveling on the rear of Port Authority buses in targeted Pittsburgh areas. A series of posters proudly\u00a0paraded the collaborative artistry of 40-60 residents of Shuman Center\u00a0addressing\u00a0the importance of art in our lives and culture through the voices of at risk youth.\u00a0The project was launched through generous grants and private donations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This year, Shuman Center and Florida Recycled\u00a0 joins\u00a0Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse to invite community youth and patrons to participate in coloring a poster gifted by Shuman Center. The poster is proudly sponsored by the generosity of John Oravik Consulting and will make its\u00a0“bus\u00a0debut”\u00a0in the summer of 2018.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Upon completion it will become part of a series of posters created in 2018 that\u00a0 travel\u00a0on\u00a0buses in Pittsburgh neighborhoods in an ongoing mission to spread the message of the importance of art in our lives and culture.\u00a0As many as twelve \u201cWhy Art?\u201d Port Authority billboard\u00a0bus\u00a0announcements positioned throughout targeted areas will proudly parade the city in the upcoming year answering the question of \u201cWhy Art?\u201d through imagery. One third of the billboard will humbly ask the question \u201cWhy Art?\u201d as the other two thirds will showcase beautiful artwork created by youth and patrons of\u00a0Pittsburgh Center for\u00a0Creative Reuse\u00a0while\u00a0answering the question boldly with the word \u201cBECAUSE\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

Florida Recycled, Shuman Juvenile Detention Center and Pittsburgh Center Creative Reuse understand the importance of\u00a0creative\u00a0development\u00a0in cultural, community and personal growth\u00a0and have joined in partnership to offer a unique opportunity\u00a0to unite\u00a0and arm\u00a0community members with a\u00a0louder\u00a0public voice\u00a0to advocate\u00a0the healing powers\u00a0of\u00a0art,\u00a0acceptance and inclusion\u00a0in this\u00a0otherwise unlikely partnering.\u00a0We\u00a0hope to exemplify the numerous benefits that creative education affords in all our lives and how art is\u00a0a\u00a0powerful healing force in bridging gaps between communities and all people.<\/span><\/div>\n

I drew this picture to represent that there is beauty in a mind of corruption, there is a spark of imagination on a blank page, sometimes it becomes a challenge to pursue these thoughts. I made this the way it is to show there is a key to happiness through all of your wildest moments that live in your memory.
